Countdown to construction of two primary new schools - one in Scartho, the other in Waltham

Not much in the way of landscaping for the proposed Scartho school

TWO new primary schools are likely  be built in North East Lincolnshire - one in Scartho, the other in Waltham.

Both will be sufficient to accommodate 210 pupils, aged between 4 and 11, in response to local population  increase following the construction of new housing.

The Scartho school has been earmarked for land adjacent to Aldi's supermarket off Matthew Telford Way.

Location of the Waltham school will be on a 1.39-hectare site bounded by Sunningdale to the south, Woodhall Drive and Lindrick Walk, to the north and west, and Archer Road to the east.

The landscaping proposed for both seems modest, and neither design is likely to win any architectural awards.

Both projects are subject to planning consent from North East Lincolnshire Council, but it is not thought that  this will be an issue.

A somewhat drab design - the scheme envisaged for Waltham

The Grimsby News says: When the Victorians built schools, they were solid but ornate structures, architecturally designed to provide inspiration for those who worked in them - adults and children alike. But since then - and increasingly since the 1960s - they have become just blocks, almost brutalist in concept. It is great that two new schools are to be built in our borough, but what a shame that they will both resemble the sort of factory-type units in which battery hens live out their short and unhappy existence! Before rubber-stamping the projects, our planners should demand more creativity and imagination from the architects.
