COUNCIL inspectors have carried out a series of late-night checks on taxi drivers in Cleethorpes.

It emerged today that licensing officers, working alongside police, had undertaken 19 roadside spot checks on hackney carriage and private hire vehicles on Saturday.

The threefold purpose was to:

* Check the state of the vehicle

* Establish that clear signage was in place

* Confirm  that the driver carried the appropriate ID badge.

Today, a council official stated: "Two cars had their plates situated in the wrong position - in the rear window instead of  on the rear bumper.

"Another had damage to its rear bumper and would not pass a taxi inspection.

"Three vehicles had tyres very close to the legal limit.

" One hackney carriage car’s taxi bubble (the light on top of a taxi) was not working.

"One taxi driver was spoken to by police for parking on the footpath in the High Street in Cleethorpes."

Meanwhile, one  unlicensed vehicle displaying a taxi bubble was spotted parked up in Cleethorpes Market Place.

The offending drivers can now look forward to receiving a warning letter from North East Lincolnshire Council's  licensing department.

Councillor Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: "These checks are a routine piece of work for our licensing officers, working in partnership with Humberside police.

"The last thing we want is for taxis to be in an unsafe condition, putting people’s lives at risk. We urge taxi drivers in our borough to stick to the rules and ensure that their vehicles are in peak condition at all times."
