POPPY APPEAL FUN RUN - SATURDAY NOVEMBER 12

STRONG and sustained drizzle put a dampener on this morning's fun run staged on Cleethorpes seafront to raise funds for Poppy Appeal and military charities. However, the occasion still attracted about 50 participants, both adults and children, plus Army cadets and dignitaries including the mayor of North East Lincolnshire, Coun Christina McGilligan-Fell. Below are some scenes from the event.

Big Frank - fundraising visit to resort

 

 

FORMER British boxing champion Frank Bruno  is coming to Cleethorpes.

Thanks to his bravery, skill and modest personality, Bruno in the ring was always one of the most popular figures in British sport.

Following retirement, there was an emotional blip in his life, but encouraged by an outpouring of public support, Bruno has been enjoying renewed success as an after-dinner speaker.

His appearance at the memorial hall on the evening of Friday December 2 will help to raise funds for a charity - Class Act Theatre Arts & Community Trust.

The evening will also feature a three-course meal, plus magician Steve Greenwood and dancing to the small hours to music from the Sensational Fuzion Showgroup.

Tickets, available from the tourist information bureau in Cleethorpes Library, cost £50 or £75 for a canapes-and-champagne  meet-and-greet with the guest.

CLEETHORPES HOTEL UP FOR GRABS

Handily placed for the seafront - the Kristina

                               

 THE Kristina Hotel on Queens Parade, Cleethorpes, is once again on the market.

Despite a favourable location not far from the seafront, the premises has struggled in recent years.

Details about the property and the asking price have not yet been divulged by agents Lovelle Bacons.

The Kristina has the benefit of  parking spaces for guests

                     

Also on the market with the same agents is the 14-bedroom Clee House Hotel on Clee Road, Cleethorpes

Offers in the region of £550,000 are being sought.

CLEETHORPES IN THE FALL

TODAY'S sunshine brought out the best in the autumn leaves on the Grimsby area's superb trees. How the townscape would suffer if these trees fell victim to disease or were felled. Below is a selection of photographs taken this afternoon along Taylor's Avenue and in Haverstoe Park, both in Cleethorpes.

 

CHEMICAL 'SOAKING' FOR CLEETHORPES COASTAL NATURE RESERVE FRINGE

                                     
It looks colourful, but . . .

By allowing an alien powder to be scattered over part of Cleethorpes coastal nature reserve in advance of a late-summer foreshore  fun-run,  North East Lincolnshire Council scarcely enhanced its reputation as a custodian of wildlife.

Whatever the substance (probably dyed cornflour), its distribution  will have done no  favour to any butterflies, bees, ladybirds, grasshoppers or other  insects unlucky enough to have been within the deposit zone.

If an individual or business offloaded a mystery chemical over parts of  the nature reserve, it would possibly face prosecution, but because of the involvement of a partner-organisation of the council (Lincs Inspire), a blind eye was probably turned.

No one likes a spoilsport (or a killjoy) and the luminous substance doubtless added to the gaiety of the occasion, but if the event is to repeated in future, here's hoping  integrity of the nature reserve will be respected.
                                                    

COUNCIL WAS PAID £25,000 TO HOST 2016 ARMED FORCES DAY

THE main grant awarded to North East Lincolnshire Council for hosting this year's National Armed Forces Day in Cleethorpes was £25,000. 

According to the Whitehall-based Armed Forces Covenant Grant Team, this is the sum routinely provided "to support infrastructure and publicity costs". 

The corresponding event next year, which will be funded to the same amount is due to take place in Liverpool.                                                 

LOW-COST APARTMENTS SCHEME FOR GRIMSBY

A BLOCK of 16 low-cost apartments could be built on a plot of land at the corner of Convamore Road and Eleanor Street in Grimsby.

The project would be undertaken by Develop NEL - North East Lincolnshire Council's newly-created property development subsidiary. 

Following a brief discussion, from which press and public were excluded, the cabinet agreed to release £1.2-million towards purchase of the site. 
                                     

COUNCIL COMMITTEE OPTS FOR SECRECY OVER FRAUD UPDATE

A TEAM has been set up to "prevent and detect fraud, corruption and financial misconduct" within North East Lincolnshire Council.

This emerged at a meeting of the audit and governance committee, but the press and public were excluded from an update on what has been achieved.

When committee chairman Tim Render was asked by a reporter why the information had been classified as confidential, NELC's  head of  audit and assurance, Peter Hanmer, intervened to say the decision  had been made  on "legal advice".

Only Coun Andrew De Freitas (Lib-Dem, Park) voted against the exclusion order. "This is a democracy," he said.

Also withheld from press and public was a report outlining NELC's approach to risk management.

                                                               

THE FEARLESS FOXES OF GRIMSBY AND CLEETHORPES!

                                                                                                                  

On the scent of something tasty - will it take him to someone's kitchen?

 FOXES in Cleethorpes and Grimsby are becoming increasingly fearless.

In their quest for food, they have even begun entering homes through open back doors. That's worrying  especially for anyone with a baby or toddler.

The creatures are spectacular to view, but few have a kind word about them.

One things in their favour is that they probably keep down numbers of mice and rats. 

They also scavenge (and thus help to cleanse) town centre streets for the discarded remains of takeaway meals.

COUNCIL RETHINK ON UNPOPULAR TRAFFIC LIGHTS PLAN 

 

IT'S back to the drawing board on  controversial proposals to replace roundabouts with traffic lights at Nun's Corner, Grimsby, and at Tollbar, Cleethorpes.

 

Following opposition from the public, North East Lincolnshire Council's Labour-controlled cabinet has resolved to put any decision on hold pending consideration by the regeneration and environment scrutiny panel at its meeting on November 29. 

 

The pause has been welcomed  by the leader of the opposition Conservative Group, Coun Philip Jackson. 

 

He said: "This will  gives us an opportunity to have a proper look at these proposals.

 

"There is a lot of public opposition to removing the roundabouts and having traffic light controlled junctions at these locations.

"Many road users think it will add to congestion, not reduce it."
