Still no word from NELC on why hedge maze was destroyed midway through bird-nesting season

Melanie Onn in front of the torn up privet hedging that formerly had been part of the maze. She wants answers.

LABOUR'S parliamentary candidate for Grimsby and Cleethorpes, Melanie Onn,  has chipped in her threep'worth in the rumpus over the seafront maze that was torn up by  North East Lincolnshire Council workmen earlier this month.

She has taken to social media to voice her disquiet.

It seems that her gripe is not so much about the loss of a free leisure attraction or about the destruction of songbird nesting/roosting habitat, but about the lack of prior consultation with two Labour councillors for the Croft Baker ward.

She says "both are actively pursuing the matter and will report back shortly".

Ms Onn is not a birder but she says she will do her best "to push protection of the natural environment and wildlife" during the rest of her General Election campaign.

Meanwhile, her Conservative poll opponent, Lia Nici, has also been speaking favourably about conservation in the run-up to the July 4 poll.

She had hoped to go walkabout on Cleethorpes saltmarsh with local birders later this summer, but the proposed meet-up has been put on hold pending the outcome of the General Election.

Meanwhile, NELC, which  says it is committed to nature conservation, but it still has not revealed why it destroyed the hedge maze in such haste without prior discussion in any public forum.

It is understood that the site may now have been designated as a VIP viewing area for the air show and military extravaganza scheduled for the last weekend of this month.
