NELC orders temporary closure of Grimsby food shop after checks indicate that rats have been a-nibbling

Tell-tale signs of visitation by rats to the Freeman Street store

A RATS problem in Grimsby's Freeman Street has resulted in a food store having to close temporarily in the run-up to Christmas.

The creatures managed to enter the premises of a particular shop that specialises in international and halal foodstuffs.

During  an inspection by North East Lincolnshire Council health officers, rodent droppings and nibble marks were discovered on a range of products.

This led to the issue of a Hygiene Emergency Prohibition Notice, obliging the shop to close because of what has been deemed "a serious risk to public health".

The shop will have to stay closed until officers have carried out further checks to ascertain whether the rats have been eradicated.

Speaking about the closure, Cllr Ron Shepherd, portfolio holder for safer and stronger communities, said: "We value the safety of our residents as the number one priority and remind food business owners that they have a duty of care to their customers."

It is not known if any other premises on Freeman Street have been similarly affected.
