A PROPOSAL by North East Lincolnshire Council to designate part of one of its holiday car parks for motorhomes and campervans has sparked controversy.
The authority's preferred location, off King's Road, is almost directly in front of where the Cleethorpes Coast Light Railway has its showcase station.
In advance of the application being determined at a planning meeting on Wednesday October 2, CCLR's directors Peter Bryant and John Kerr have lodged an objection.
They state: "We have invested tens of thousand of pounds in improving the approach and entrance to our main station at Lakeside since taking over the business in 2014.
"This has included a complete new frontage, signwriting on every roller shutter and new planted borders.
"We like to keep the site in good order and make it as attractive as possible to visitors.
"The proposed motorhome parking would negate all our efforts to create a welcoming and attractive frontage.
"It would also be an eyesore and obscure our frontage to potential visitors driving or cycling along King's Road."
NELC says the maximum of vehicles would be 10, and parking consent would be for up to 48 hours at the maximum.
Case officer Emily Davidson comments: "The use of the area for motorhomes and campervans would not be too far removed from the current use of the site.
"The formalisation of the area for this type of use is fitting within a resort area and is an expected type of development in an area like this.
"The use would not result in the permanent or semi-permanent siting of caravans.
"Overall, the proposal would not cause visual harm "
Of the CCLR's specific objections, Ms Davidson states: "Given this area has an existing use and could currently be used by vehicles, it is considered that there would be limited changes to this.
"This is also the case when considering outlook and visual amenity. 2
She adds: "The additional accommodation provision would support the surrounding businesses in terms of activity."
Because of the controversial nature of the application, Haverstoe ward councillor Keith Brookes has called it in for debate by the planning committee as an alternative to being determined by the case officer under delegated powers.

The Grimsby News says: The proposed location is in a leafy part of the seafront and adjacent to the dunes nature reserve as well as being in front of the light railway's attractively-presented main station. Some motorhomes are 10ft high or larger. Their presence will create an ugly aspect which will degrade this part of the resort. It will also create a danger, especially for elderly and disabled people plus the many young children (including school parties to the light railway) who run about in this area during the summer months. The application should be refused, and the council should find an alternative, less sensitive site.
looking at the area on Google maps, the complete area in front of the Light Railway , along the lake is a car park area, with a large parking area opposite the Public toilets. Perhaps it might have better if some of these spaces were marled as Dedicated MH parking bays.
ReplyDeleteThe fact school Children are allowed to 'run about' in this area infront of the railway, is a H&S issue in its own right, and is not a reason to object.
