AFTER a 13-year absence, Malcolm Morland is back on North East Lincolnshire Council.

In the Croft Baker ward, Cllr Morland won the seat for Labour after ousting the sitting Conservative, Bob Callison.

The victor was once a Liberal-Democrat candidate for  Cleethorpes in the parliamentary elections, but the Labour Party seems a natural home for his left-wing firebrand style of politics.

Elsewhere, there are now three Independents on the council after Paul Henderson and Lyndsey Downes won seats from Conservatives in the Yarborough and Freshney wards.

There was relief for the Conservatives in Immingham where Cllr Karen Swinburn held on to a seat which Labour might have expected to win.

Council leader Cllr Philip Jackson and former leader Cllr Keith Brookes comfortably held their seats for the Conservatives in the Waltham and Haverstoe wards as did party colleagues Stan Shreeve (Humberston & New Waltham), Henry Hudson (Wolds), Marian Boyd (Park) and Ian Lindley (Scartho).

For Labour, Matthew Patrick (Heneage), Janet Goodwin (South) and Karl Wilson (West Marsh) retained their seats, while newcomer Janet Haggis joins them after being elected in Sidney Sussex.

For the Liberal-Democrats, Nicola Aisthorpe retained her seat in East Marsh.
