TWO longstanding features of Cleethorpes seafront are to be removed.
North East Lincolnshire Council today announced that there is no future for either the privet hedge maze or the corkscrew-shaped conifer in front of the Memorial gate.
They are both to be sacrificed to make way for a proposed revamp of Memorial Gardens.
Says the council: "As part of the early 'enabling' works, the privet maze at the southern end of Pier Gardens will be removed in the coming weeks.
"Although a well-used attraction, particularly for younger children, the maze has unfortunately also attracted some anti-social behaviour over the years.
"Nor does it form part of our new plans for the Pier Gardens.
"The area occupied by the maze will be used by the Armed Forces team to enhance its display event later this year."
As part of the revamp, other vegetation will be cleared.
This will include Buddleia that has sprung along various parts of the front, most conspicuously with in the Sea Road compound earmarked for a new amenity building.
To comply with wildlife regulations, NELC says a full check of the bushes and trees will be carried out by ecologists to ensure no disturbance of nesting birds such as robins, wrens, dunnocks, blackbirds and house sparrows.
Plans for Pier Gardens include creation of an events arena and installation of play equipment.
Also on Sea Road, the WCs will be closed early next month prior to stripping out of asbestos in advance of proposed demolition.
