HAS NO ONE AT NORTH EAST LINCOLNSHIRE COUNCIL HEARD OF CLIMATE CHANGE?

Beach-raking in progress this morning

IN the month that world leaders have been pondering how to hold back global warming, North East Lincolnshire Council is continuing with its polluting ways.

One of the worst examples is its practice of raking Cleethorpes Beach to make it look, as much as possible, like a sitting room carpet.

The tractor belches carbon dioxide into the atmosphere - not just when it is moving but also in stationary mode, with its engine left running, while the driver pauses for an as-long-as-it-takes cigarette break.

The Grimsby News says: It is regrettable that, despite all the warnings, NELC is so casual in its approach to tackling global warming. Not only are its beach-raking practices harmful to the atmosphere but they are removing the shells-and-seaweed habitat which is so precious to feeding turnstones, wagtails and other birds - not to mention curious beachcombing children and adults alike. In the time it takes for the tractor-driver to complete his round, he or she could plant 50 or more trees or shrubs. The council should be setting an example in best environmental practice. It needs to review its harmful ways.
